Jewish Community of the Outer Banks

The Jewish Community of the Outer Banks (JCOB) welcomes you.

Our goal has been to provide a place on the Outer Banks for those seeking to participate in a Jewish religious environment.

The JCOB community includes:

  • permanent residents of Dare and Currituck Counties living as far north as Corolla and Moyock and as far south as Hatteras
  • families and individuals who own second homes in the OBX
  • vacationers or anyone else wishing to connect with the Jewish community while in the Outer Banks

The JCOB realizes that our Northeast North Carolina location puts us about 2 hours away from the nearest mainstream Judaic community in the Tidewater area of Virginia.  We have always felt that in order for us to serve the needs of our remote location and to grow, we need to offer a flexible program that Jewish people of different backgrounds will feel comfortable with.  On a ritual level, that means offering a reform/conservative themed Shabbat and High Holiday Service.  Our monthly Friday night or Saturday morning service takes place even if a minyan is not present.  For our Saturday service we combine our Friday night service with a Torah service to create a unique Saturday morning experience, or in the event of a weather emergency, merging or rescheduling services so that our members (and guests) will be able to participate in the event to its fullest.  This model seems to have worked quite well since we began holding services in early 2004.

Flexibility means that the JCOB is unaffiliated but uses Reform prayer books for Shabbat and High Holiday services.  We invite you to join us at our casual Friday night or Saturday morning service, held the third Friday or Saturday of each month, or at any of our other activities and celebrations.

We are proud to have held a Second Night Community Passover Seder and a Yom Hashoah Memorial service for the past 12 years.  While we do not have our own building or a rabbi, George Lurie, our lay leader, has been in charge of all of our religious activities since 2004.  The JCOB purchased a full size Torah in 2012 and proudly uses it for all religious services.

We welcome everyone's ideas, creativity and participation.  Come discover us for yourself.
